Kinja'd!!!

I was walking out of the gym tonight and I noticed a NICE E90 M3 with sparkling graphite paint that matched my car backed into the space next to me. The owner was waiting for me, apparently for around 15 minutes.

I drive a 328i. His modified M3 made my stock E90 look like it belonged to a 17 year old girl, yet he waited 15 minutes outside of a gym to talk about cars. I'm guessing the BMWCCA sticker on the rear drivers side window gave away that I was an enthusiast.

I'm looking over this guys car and he's got some impressive mods. Innotech performance exhaust (about $5.5k), BC forged wheels (another $5k), KW DDC electronically adjustable coilovers ($4.7k), and my favorite: VF engineering supercharger system (a whopping $11.2k for a 10.6 second quarter mile without any additional mods).

This guys MOD list is nearly double what my car is worth, yet he's looking over my car asking me what my detailing routine is, how I liked the auto transmission, how I like the N52 and it's glorious noise, and just generally complimenting it. He tells me he owned a 325i that looked just like mine and that it was what got him into cars and attending track days. The M3 is his daily driver and track car. The back seat is gutted and he's got some BMW performance seats up front (oh yeah, another few thousand). He wanted a car that could perform well and not draw any attention. The car looked stock exterior wise besides the classic 7 spoke wheels that nearly every person that's modified an E9x has run. I'm even thinking about picking up a set myself (definitely not a $5k set).

Bottom line: Met a really cool BMW owner that drove an incredible car but was really humble about it and seemed to be more interested in my car.

That's not embarrassing. It's true!

When I was in high school the only cars me and my friends could afford all had under 200 HP. It was the mid 90s. Anything with over 200 HP at the crank was a fancy performance vehicle!

What parent gives a kid that young that much HP and THAT much torque?

335 has way too much overall power for a high schooler. Teenagers should have 200 lb-ft max!

Kinja'd!!! AM3R > Manuél Ferrari
07/19/2014 at 03:44

Kinja'd!!!1

If I had a 335i at 16 I'd be saving every penny and putting it towards power mods. What 16 y/o enthusiast wouldn't? That would lead to a bad bad accident.

My high school was in the really nice part of the suburbs. You'd see nicer cars in the student parking lot than the staff!

200 lb-ft is enough! I wish we spent more time teaching kids how to drive instead. When I was 14 my dad started giving me lessons. Within a month I was driving safely on normal roads around our neighborhood. In VA to get your license (9 months after getting your permit which is just a written test at the DMV) you just take a "behind the wheel" course. It was scary to see how bad the other teens were. They would almost merge without looking, stop way too early, wander all over the lane on the highway, and just frankly suck at driving. I was better at 14 than the people in the car with me. Every single one of us passed the course too......

Haha true. If we had the 335 in HS we'd mod it and have so much power we'd die for sure.

That's crazy how the kids at your HS has such nice cars. Most at mine had pretty average or below average cars.

I think kids should be given cars that aren't fast and don't handle that well either. That way there is no motivation to accelerate hard or hit the corners too hard. A 15 year old Accord I4 would be good

Oddly enough, the most common car at my school WAS slow and handled poorly. The jeep wrangler! We had around 5 jeeps in the parking lot, with all of them being manuals.

The honda accord is honestly one of the best first cars out there. You can get a manual, its roomy enough that you can squeeze 3 in the back seat, it's economical so you don't spend your whole paycheck on gas, and they sell pretty cheap if you go used.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Europeans ordered F1 and E Gear even more than US buyers did once those transmissions came out. The stick would have been dead in the M5 if it wasn't from the uproar of US BMW CCA members!

It was fun! No I've got to drive it here and there over the past couple years since he got it. But not much because it always has F1 issues that he refuses to pay Ferrari to fix! He thinks it's definitely fixed this time after he took everything apart and put it back together again. So far so good.

Manuel was a lot more common in the 1st gen Gallardo and the 360. He is very rare in the F430 and ultra rare in the 2nd gen Gallardo. At least here in the US...

my brain is so confused

I want a Ferrari so bad

Driving my dad's car is just makes it a tease

I want to have my own I could use any day of the week and in any situation

But I can't really afford it yet

But I still have bad thoughts about getting a big loan

It would be a lot easier if I sold everything I have now

but I really don't want to sell more than that E46

And I can't even decide what I would buy if I was ready to buy now

This coupe I just showed you make the most sense. The three pedal set up and relatively reasonable cost to purchase and maintain makes it a winner.

But I've never had a convertible so I want a spider

But the three puddle spiders are hard-to-find and very expensive. Sellers want a premium for the three pedal spiders. Only one for sale right now is 190,000. For that price you could get a used 458 coupe.

If I were to go nuts I could get a 458 spider. It would be expensive but perfect. If they still sell for more than they are new. So there's no point in buying one used.

And ordering a new 458 spider with just a little bit options is about the same money as ordering a 458 Speciale with little to no options. A stripper 458 comes with a lot of carbon fiber so you don't need to add many options. And it's a more rare car and will hold it's value better.

I would sell a kidney for the upcoming 458 Speciale spider. But rumor is that Ferrari will only make 458 of them total. And rumor is that you only get to buy one if you already purchased a 458 Speciale. So that's not to happen.

All cars of the same. Deciding on a Ferrari is just like deciding on a BMW. You start out looking at used cars. And then you compare them to what you could buy if you spent a little more and bought new. Then you compare that to other models that you could get new if you spend a little more than that. And you eventually end up at twice your original budget.

Please excuse typos. On my phone and used Siri for this

you've got an awesome dad!

That's quiet the conundrum. I feel you on that last part! This is what's going on in my head right now: I could spend $40k buying an M3, but I could spend a little more and buy a 964 and RWB it, but for THAT price I'd be a little shy of a base model new M3, which I could instead spend on a used 911 turbo, but I could get a new F-type coupe for a little more, but I'd want 3 pedals and now I'd be approaching used R8 territory. I wouldn't daily an R8, so I might as well get something even more impractical and spend a little (or a lot) more on a GT3.

http://m.autotrader.com/vdp.html?id=37…

http://m.autotrader.com/vdp.html?id=37…

This isn't good.

A quick search shows that renting an F430 spider F1 is the cheapest at €1800 while a 430 Scuderia is only €100 more. Both are only 1 day rentals. If I want to be a "plebeian" I can rent a 991 Carrera 4s for €800 or any M car for the same price.

my dad is pretty awesome. He's a total car addict. Which is why I am... Except I can't wrench. Someone has to do his job all he's wrenching... He wrenches every day now while I do the office work

Ha ha you have the disease too. you're going to the same price escalation thoughts that i am.

Where does it end? Are we doomed to spend every last cent possible? Does getting a middle-of-the-road car actually cost us more because will end up getting bored of it and selling it and buying the best car we could possibly get? I think maybe. You should probably just get the GT3 or R8 and I should probably find a way to order the 458S.

We'll Both be poor and eating Ramen for dinner. But we will be happy and content. And we won't have the itch to upgrade.

If you can make the GT3 or R8 happen then do it. I think you'll be happier than you would with an M3 or 964. The GT3 and R8 are just epic. You literally could DD them if you wanted to. They are reliable and modern enough.

That's a hard choice on the rental. The Scud is supposed to be hard to drive. I've heard from others that it's less forgiving than the standard car. I'm never driven it myself though.

Consider yourself lucky, I'm the only one with a hint of enthusiasm in my family. Whenever I tell my dad I'm looking at a car that isn't just a few years old he goes off telling me how it'll be unreliable and a dumb choice to make.

Get your dad to teach you how to wrench! I'm by no means good but it's an enjoyable way to be around cars.

The R8 is really drawing my attention. Lovely color combo. I feel like I'd like the GT3 more even though it's modified.

We should make a pact, we both sell everything and buy the cars we love. We'll survive off ramen and Oppositelock.

It's funny, the other day after seeing another house in my neighborhood put up for sale I considered downsizing for a second. I know I'd spend the money pocketed on a car. This would be a horrible financial decision because the values in my area are only going up because everyone that works in DC wants to live here because the commute is tolerable and the schools are amazing. I snapped out of it after the Autotrader app crashed on my phone.

Haha your dad sounds like Silvestro's dad!!

I should get my dad to teach me. It's just hard to spend time on it. I am always so backlogged on office work. I should be doing office work right now to get caught up. But I'm procrastinating so I'm on Oppo instead... If I don't get started soon it will be too late.

I'm down for the pact! Ramen and Oppo will get us through until we've made more money and can actually afford steak and gas for the new car :)

The hardest thing is deciding between what you want vs. what will go up in value. If you were picking based on appreciation then it would be best to get a 100% stock car. Both the GT3 and the R8 would be good for long term value if stock as both are rare cars. I think any stick shift R8 will be a good car to buy and hold long term. Funny that the car you found is listed as automatic but it's stick. Usually it's the other way around and cars listed as manual are actually flappy paddle.

The interesting thing about the R8 is that while it's not a car that people commonly put on the track I've read some people say that it's a great track car. I read one owner rave about tracking his R8 V8. He claimed that the car is able to take serious track time even better than Porsches that he has owned. It might be true because Audi put a serious amount of effort into that car. The R8 might end up being like the early years of the LS400. Toyota put an insane amount of effort into the LS400 because they were new to the luxury market and knew that their car had to be the best or it would fail. They later started skimping on quality and just ensured that their car was a little ahead of ze Germans in reliability. Audi apparently put a crazy amount of testing into each R8. The future cars might not get as much effort.

Yeah definitely don't sell your house. I think of that too. I could downsize as well. But I'd rather have the extra space to grow into. But it is tempting to sell it, rent, and put the money into a speculative car purchase! I saw an F40 yesterday that was $1.5M. Insanely clean. If selling my house would net me that much cash then I'd buy the F40 and garage it and hope that it rises to $10M as soon as possible...

Get to work Rusto, I don't wanna be the reason you get fired!!

The R8 surprised me being a manual. It'll probably stay on the market longer because buyers looking for a manual won't find it and buyers looking for an auto won't want it.

You make a really good point with the LS400. Audi nailed it with the R8. They make the car handsome and not ostentatious now so the older guy that originally came in looking for an S8 fall in love with it. They make the performance of it amazing so that reviewers and enthusiasts love the car. They have it in the movie Iron Man so that teenage boys-young adult males fall in love with it. They love the car and dream about owning one in the future. They read about how great it is and how high the quality is. Audi slowly starts to cut corners and tone it down to make it a more mass market car. Fast forward 10 years: the people that fell in love with it now have the money to buy it. They remember how great it was, blah blah blah and buy it even though it isn't as great as it used to be.

If the R8 was a V10 it would be the easy choice as the better investment. I'm not too surprised to hear how good they are on the track. I always thought of the R8 as the old mans/rich mans 911. Not as performance oriented, but similar idea.

I'll keep the house until I outgrow it. I really do love the area.

Sometimes they can't believe I take the 911 through the drive through. They will be floored when we take food home in the R8 and Ferrari

Haha don't worry I can't be fired. My old man is my boss, lol. If he fires me then he will have to actually work instead of working on cars!

Mother of God you're right! You should talk them down and buy that car! Demand they sell it to you for $10K less because it has the wrong transmission!

Wow you thought of more R8 angles than I did. The next generation won't be nearly as fun. There won't be a stick. And Audi will get rid of the N/A engines as soon as they figure out how to use their turbo charged V8 without causing fires (they've been trying and failing to do that for a while now). And I am not down with the digital cockpit that's used in the new Lambo and that will be used in the next R8. It seems so... gimmicky.

The R8 V10 probably will be the better investment. But the R8 V8 would still be really sweet...

You're a lucky man!

I wouldn't be surprised if audi axed the V10 once they can get down the Supercharged V8. They might keep it around a little longer so people can say they have the V10, but the performance gap will be eliminated. The noise though....

It's a little bit of a drive but I'm thinking about scheduling an appointment to test drive it and talk numbers.

So nice! And so close to me!

What's crazy is that I could order a 458S for not much more than that.

The standard coupe and spider are so expensive when you add options.

The Speciale is a much better deal. The extra cost gives you cosmetic stuff plus better performance. It's kind of like the 911 GTS...

Damn it that's it, I'm literally going to email the salesman I met at this dealer right now and ask him some questions. Just for "research" purposes :)

I think the V8 they would use would be the TT one from the S8?

Yeah the noise of the N/A V8 and V10 just can't be beat... That's why the 458S will be a future collector's item.

Speaking of which, here is the email:

——————-

Hi George,

I've been putting a lot of thought into which car I want. I've been going to car shows and talking to people on FChat.

The car that I really want may not exist and if it does I won't qualify to buy one. Have you heard anything about the 458 Speciale Spider? I really want the Speciale, but I also really want a spider. Rumor is Ferrari is making one but will only sell it to people who have already purchased the 458 Speciale. I don't know if that means the buyer must have already taken delivery of the Speciale or not.

Would I qualify to order the current Speciale? I know its production is being somewhat limited. But I don't know if there are any remaining allocations left?

Also I have not seen any used 458 Speciale cars for sale? Do you know what they go for? If the used ones are selling for marked up price then I suppose we could consider ordering one for me and then later selling it if the Speciale Spider does get produced and I manage to qualify to buy one.

Thanks

it would probably be a more tuned version of it.

Hopefully he gets back to you soon!! You're lucky that you live in an area where a spider can be enjoyed year round.

I know the first year was sold out but not sure about the 2nd year!

Yeah it is awesome that the spider can be enjoyed year round here. It never really rains. And it never snows where I am.

The one big bummer about the F430 spider is that there isn't much headroom. I'm 6' and my head almost hits the soft top when it's up! The 16M is supposed to be better because the race seats sit lower.

The 458 has more head room in the standard car

Oh man if your head is almost hitting the soft top and you're only 6' (so am i!) it must be pretty cramped.

We've been getting pounded by thunderstorms lately. It seems to be over but it was just annoying!

I've heard of people swapping seats in their Ferraris so they can comfortably fit. I met this guy that was around 6'9 at a local meet who told me he couldn't fit in his 458. I'm not sure how he remedied it but apparently now he fits!

The power Daytona's sit kind of high! The cabin itself isn't cramped at all. It's just the headroom that's cramped. The non-power regular and race seats are supposed to sit lower and make things better.

Thunderstorms are crazy! Being hit by lightning would suck...

Haha the guy you met must have done the same mod that LeBron James did. He's also 6'9" and also has a 458
